Sport at Birkdale State School
Birkdale State School has a proud and strong sporting tradition. We are committed to fostering a love of sport and physical activity, encouraging students to develop their skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Our school provides a wide range of sporting opportunities for students of all ages and abilities. From interschool competitions to extracurricular programs, we strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment where every student can participate and thrive.
Students have the opportunity to represent Birkdale State School in various sports, including athletics, swimming, and team sports such as soccer, netball, and rugby. We take pride in our students' achievements and celebrate their efforts in school-based competitions, district events, and beyond.
Through our sporting programs, we aim to promote a healthy and active lifestyle while instilling important values such as perseverance, teamwork, and respect.
Sporting Houses
Birkdale State School has three sporting houses, named after the first three families to enrol at the school:
Wilson – Green
McNeilly – Yellow
Woodgate – Red
All students from Prep to Year 6 are assigned to a sporting house, with siblings placed in the same house. The two major house events are the Athletics Carnival and Swimming Carnival, where students proudly compete in their house colours.
School Carnivals
Each year, we host three major sports carnivals:
Term 1, Week 10 – Cross Country Carnival (Years 3–6)
Term 2, Week 9 – Athletics Carnival (Prep–Year 6)
Term 4, Week 9 – Swimming Carnival (Years 3–6)
These carnivals serve as selection events for our 10- to 12-year-old students who qualify to represent Birkdale State School at the district level.
District Carnivals
Students who meet qualifying standards can advance to district-level competitions:
Term 1, Week 4 – Swimming Carnival
Term 2, Week 3 – Cross Country Carnival
Term 3, Week 4 – Athletics Carnival
Performing well at district carnivals may lead to selection for regional trials.
District Trials
Birkdale State School students aged 10–12 have the opportunity to trial for district teams in the Bayside District. Successful students' progress to regional trials. A variety of sports are available, including: AFL, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Softball, Squash, Tennis, Touch Football, Aquathon/Triathlon.
Students aged 10–12 can represent Birkdale State School in various sporting competitions. Training sessions are held before school and during lunchtimes.
Term 1, Week 10 – Osprey Cup (Volleyball)
Term 2, Week 8 – Osprey Cup (Basketball)
Term 3, Week 10 – Osprey Cup (Touch Football)
Term 4, Week 4 – All Schools Cup (Touch Football)
Swimming Program
As part of the Health and Physical Education curriculum, students participate in a swimming program focused on water safety and stroke development. Parent volunteers assist in delivering this program.
Term 1, Weeks 3–10 – Years 1 & 2
Term 4, Weeks 2–9 – Years 3–6
This program ensures students develop confidence and essential swimming skills.
